A documented gypsum occurrence near Berbera
Gypsum has been recorded near Berbera for decades. Historical British geological work described extensive gypsum and anhydrite exposures within roughly 9 to 25 miles of the harbour. More recently, Somaliland’s Ministry of Energy and Minerals reported a 2020 reconnaissance programme southeast of Berbera in which geologists collected 37 samples from white-to-grey gypsum occurrences.
These records establish geological context, but they are not a substitute for a current reserve estimate or a shipment certificate. Historical tonnage descriptions should not be treated as a modern measured resource. A commercial gypsum supplier must instead connect a defined extraction area, current permits, a representative sampling plan, an agreed specification and an executable route to port.
Interpreting 96–99% quality
KARMIN’s identified supply position indicates gypsum purity in the 96–99% range. That range is relevant to cement, plasterboard and other industrial buyers, but purity must be tied to a test method and to the precise material offered. Each lot remains subject to representative sampling, independent laboratory analysis and final buyer acceptance.
A complete specification should address more than the headline calcium-sulphate content. Buyers may set limits for free moisture, combined water, anhydrite, chlorides, insoluble residue, magnesium and iron compounds. Colour, lump size and fines content can also affect handling and downstream use. The appropriate certificate of analysis should therefore be agreed before loading, with clear tolerances and a method for resolving any difference between load-port and destination testing.
From quarry position to FOB cargo
The commercial sequence starts with end use. A cement producer may need a different size distribution and impurity ceiling from a wallboard manufacturer. After the buyer provides its target specification, quantity and delivery window, KARMIN coordinates availability confirmation, sampling, laboratory review and a handling plan. Approved material is then segregated, moved to the Berbera corridor and prepared for the selected loading method.
FOB pricing depends on quantity, inland haulage, crushing or screening requirements, stockpile time, port handling, survey costs and the vessel or container plan. For that reason, competitiveness should be compared on a like-for-like landed-cost basis, not through an unsupported headline price. A useful request identifies annual demand, trial-lot size, destination, packaging or bulk preference and the required loading window.
Export infrastructure changes the commercial equation
The historical constraint on gypsum near Berbera was not only geology; older survey records specifically noted the absence of mineral-loading facilities. Berbera now operates as a modern multipurpose port under DP World, with container, general-cargo and bulk capability. The nearby Berbera Economic Zone adds serviced land, open-yard storage and pre-built warehouse capacity that can support processing, staging and export-oriented operations where commercially suitable.
This does not remove the need for mine planning or quality control. It does, however, allow a prospective buyer to evaluate Somaliland gypsum through a practical sequence: confirm specification, inspect or sample the origin, approve an independent assay, agree a trial shipment and scale after performance is demonstrated. That is the basis on which high-purity gypsum from Somaliland can compete for regional and international demand.
